چکیده

We studied the effects of oral propranolol administered in 2 low dose schedules (5 or 20 mg 8 hourly) and for a short term (30 to 36 hours) on heart rate, plasma renin activity, and arterial pressure, both at rest and after an isoprenaline challenge (8 mg i.v. over 2 min) in 6 normal subjects. Resting heart rate, plasma renin activity, and systolic pressure all fell significantly after the 5 mg dose and only small additional falls were observed when the dose was increased to 20 mg. The fall of diastolic pressure was not significant with 5 mg, but was significant with 20 mg. That beta-blockade occurred with these low doses was confirmed by diminished responses to isoprenaline. The isoprenaline-induced changes of heart rate, plasma renin activity, and diastolic pressure were reduced by 77, 80, and 65 per cent, respectively, by the 5 mg dose of propranolol, and by 89, 94, and 87 per cent by the 20 mg dose, suggesting that cardiac and renal receptors are equally sensitive to propranolol. These data indicate a rapid blood pressure lowering action of low dose propranolol in normal subjects and suggest that this effect is in part at least a consequence of blockade of renal and/or cardiac betareceptors. Our results also raise the possibility that much lower doses of propranolol than generally used may be clinically effective.

Hemodynamic and beta-adrenergic receptor adaptations during long-term beta-adrenoceptor blockade. Studies with acebutolol, atenolol, pindolol, and propranolol in hypertensive patients.

In an attempt to further clarify the mechanism of the maintenance of the antihypertensive effect of beta-adrenoceptor antagonists, the effects of four antagonists with different ancillary properties (acebutolol, atenolol, pindolol, and propranolol) on systemic and renal hemodynamics, body fluid volumes, hormones, and lymphocyte beta-adrenoceptor density were studied in four groups of 10 hyperte...

Effect of oral propranolol on rest, exercise and postexercise left ventricular performance in normal subjects and patients with coronary artery disease.

The effect of beta-adrenergic blockade with oral propranolol on resting, exercise and postexercise ventricular performance was evaluated using multiple-gated equilibrium cardiac blood and pool images in normal volunteers and patients with coronary artery disease. Propranolol produced no detectable effect on basal left ventricular function in normal subjects at doses producing intermediate (160 ...

اثر عصاره آبی هویج Daucus carota بر انقباض‌های رحم موش صحرایی غیرآبستن

Background and Objective: Daucus carota has antioxidant effect and a high content of beta carotene. It has been reported that Daucus carota has estrogenic and hormonal effects on female reproductive system. Since there was no experimental research about the effect of this plant on uterus contraction, we therefore decided to study the effect of aqueous extract of Daucus carota on uteru...

ENHANCED HISTAMINE H I RECEPTOR BLOCKADE WITH CHLORPHENIRAMINE IN THE ASTHMATIC TRACHEO-BRONCHIAL TREE: FURTHER EVIDENCE FOR INCREASED DRUG DELIVERY IN ASTHMA

We have measured the competitive antagonistic effect of chlorpheniramine in bronchi of 8 normal and 12 asthmatic subjects. Classical pharmacological theory states that the degree of competitive antagonism depends only upon 1) antagonist concentration at the receptor, and 2) receptor affinity. Delivery and affinity also influence agonist responsiveness, but measurement of bronchial antagoni...

Pharmacodynamic studies of beta adrenergic antagonism induced in man by propranolol and practolol.

The pharmacodynamic activities of two beta adrenergic antagonists, propranolol and practolol, were compared in eight hypertensive patients. The activity of each antagonist was established in relation to its blood concentration at maximal and submaximal adrenergic blockade defined by inhibition of exercise tachycardia. Maximal inhibition of exercise tachycardia was comparable with both drugs and...
